Title: Spirit Frogs (or My Survivor Community)

Date: 2024

Medium: Oil on canvas

There wasn't anyone to protect me from trauma. But I had companions. The river frogs, frog Riri, and the frog in the crack in the wall.

Eventually I found my community. Survivors who gave me understanding, support, and retrospective protection. A sense of belonging. My Spirit Frogs

Biography

There is a hollowed wheel

From a broken bicycle

That sits in the empty lot

Between two houses.

I’ve walked past it many times;

Noticing the growing vines –

Of rust and weeds – swallowing the

Spokes as if they were metal meals.

I look on jealously.

First, at the harmony of weed and rust,

Of rust and metal,

Of metal and ground.

And then, at

The other children

Patrolling the dirt road;

Stick in hand,

Edging their wheels ahead –

And chasing after them –

With full bellies and

Fuller wheels

Of laughter,

Spreading down the dirt road, bouncing

Between the two houses, and settling

On the empty lot.

The hollowed wheel rustles,

As if to drink in a familiar sound

Made distant by the years

Passing since its abandon

And I wonder,

If broken things – like us

Made of forgotten–

Are left chasing–
